Walter Mitty (Danny Kaye) is a pulp-fiction writer with a habit of daydreaming. He lives with an overprotective mother, and is constantly dreaming of being a hero with exciting adventures. When he meets Rosalind van Hoorn (Virginia Mayo), his dreams may actually become true. Rosalind gives Walter a black book, which she alleges has the locations of some Dutch crown jewels which have been hidden since World War II. Suddenly in the midst of an adventure like the one he dreamed of, Walter must figure out a confusing conspiracy that he has been thrown in the middle of. Will he figure out what's really going on, and will he decide that his less exciting life is better than these new adventures?
