When Melody Jones (Gary Cooper) wanders into a frontier town with his friend George Fury (William Demarest) his identity is mistaken by the locals. The locals believe him to be Monte Jarrad (Dan Duryea), who is a wanted bandit, and who happens to be hiding out with his girlfriend Cherry de Longpre (Loretta Young). Monte tries to take advantage of the situation by having Cherry seen with him, causing the townsfolk to be distracted from the real bandit. As the two get to know each other, however, the tables are turned and Cherry begins trying to help Melody and the townspeople to escape the machinations of Monte and his sidekick.
