In a remote New Mexico outpost in the American West of 1880s, Apaches on the warpath wreak havoc on the local fort. Captain Richard Lance (Gregory Peck) faces a deadly attack when he tries to transfer Indian prisoners to another location. Well-like officer Lt. William Holloway (Gig Young) is killed during an ambush, and many hold Captain Lance accountable for allowing the popular officer to take on the dangerous job, but the various unpleasant members of the mission, including Scout Joe Harmony (Jeff Corey), Timothy Gilchrist (Ward Bond), and Trooper Kebussyan (Lon Chaney), realize he is the best hope for survival from another attack, though he could be murdered by his own men at any time.
