Escaping from the law after accidentally burning down a carnival, two out-of-work musicians - Scat Sweeney (Bing Crosby), and Hot Lips Barton (Bob Hope) - stow away on a passenger ship bound for Rio. On board they befriend Lucia Maria de Andrade (Dorothy Lamour), who has been hypnotized by her evil Aunt Catherine Vail (Gale Sondergaard) in order to make her marry Sherman Mallory (George Meeker) against her will. The boys get a job in a Rio nightclub, where they teach their local musicians hipster slang in order to make them appear American. When their trick is found out, they lose the gig, and are broke once more. Hypnotized again, Lamour threatens to have Bing & Bob arrested. The boys try to prevent the sham marriage, while nasty Aunt Catherine is out to get them, even hypnotizing Bing & Bob in order to make them kill each other! The boys turn the tables when they manage to hypnotize aunt Catherine's heavies, (Frank Faylen and Joseph Vitale) in order to grab the secret papers they need to prevent the wedding.
